His Excellency Michael Collins
Michael Collins became ambassador of Ireland to the United States in July 2007.

Ambassador Collins previously served as second secretary-general in the Department of the Taoiseach, with responsibility for international and European Union affairs, particularly the Northern Ireland Peace Process (2001-07).

In addition, he served as ambassador to the Czech Republic and Ukraine (1999-2001), as well as ambassador to Saudi Arabia with concurrent accreditation to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (1995-99). Other postings include counselor at the Irish Embassy in Washington (1993-95) and counselor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Press Section Headquarters (1990-93) and in the Anglo-Irish Division Headquarters (1990). He was also first secretary in the Political Division Headquarters (1986-90) and the Anglo-Irish Division Headquarters (1977-82), as well as first secretary at the Irish Consulate-General in New York (1982-86).

Ambassador Collins, who joined the Foreign Service in 1974, studied at the Institute of Public Administration in Blackrock College and holds a bachelor’s of science degree from Trinity College in Dublin.

Ambassador Collins, who also speaks Italian and French, is married to Marie Collins and the couple has three children: Brian (21), David (18) and Owen (15).
