Performance Anxiety
Although Talent Is High, Acting in ‘Macbeth’ Disappointing
by Lisa Troshinsky

The Shakespeare Theatre’s season opener of "Macbeth," featuring notorious thespian greats Kelly McGillis and Patrick Page as the tragic and violent couple, doesn’t live up to the actors’ high billing or to Shakespeare’s famous and wonderful tale of angst. During the production, directed by Shakespeare Theatre Artistic Director Michael Kahn, the audience doesn’t experience the gut-wrenching anguish that it hopes for when attending one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies.

Juggling Journalism
German Ambassador’s Wife Balancing Motherhood, Writing Career
by Gail Scott
Some ambassadors would rather not have the media around. Others enjoy being interviewed and consider members of the media their friends. But few trust even their best media contacts enough to include them in private dinner parties where the conversation is "off the record." However, one top Washington ambassador has no choice: German Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger. Jutta, his wife of three years, is a well-known German journalist and author who normally covers politics and, in fact, met her husband during an interview.

Startling ‘Andrea Chénier’
Director Trelinski Opens Season With Production of Enchanting Power
by Gary Tischler

When the curtain was raised recently on "Andrea Chénier," audiences could immediately feel a sensibility that wanted to explore traditional material in a highly non-traditional way. In other words, the season opener of the Washington National Opera wasn’t going to be your grandmother’s night at the opera.

Acting With Wings
Hiroyuki Liao Gives Tour de Force Performance in ‘M. Butterfly’
by Lisa Troshinsky
Arena Stage’s "M. Butterfly" is important for several reasons. The script is one of the first works by an Asian-American playwright (David Henry Hwang) to earn wide acclaim, and it dares to explore complex human relationships by looking at sexuality, gender and racial stereotypes, as well as cross-cultural and political ties. But the major accomplishment of this production, directed by Tazewell Thompson, is that it showcases the extraordinary acting talent of recent Juilliard grad J. Hiroyuki Liao.

Invitation to Tragedy

There’s a jewel of a production waiting for you but you have to find it first. Buried in the dark and concrete canyons of the Rosslyn Spectrum theater is a brilliant work of art: "Host and Guest," staged by the Classika-Synetic theater troupe of Arlington, Va.
