A Classical Evening
The Washington Symphony Orchestra celebrated its musical roots with its annual gala, ìMusic Is Our Future,î held at the elegant Patterson House Mansion in Dupont Circle. Proceeds from the reception and concert went to benefit the Washington Symphony Orchestraís (WSO) various Youth Outreach programs for the 2003 season.
As the official orchestra of the nationís capital, the WSO has a long history of community involvement that spans nearly 70 years. Volunteer programs include tailor-made classical musical performances for children of all ages and concerts designed to spotlight up-and-coming talent.
Organized by DC Social Insider, the WSO gala boasted a star-studded roster of prestigious chairpersons and committee members. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and Ambassador of Paraguay Leila Rashid Cowles served as honorary chairpersons, and honorary congressional co-chairpersons included Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Joe Lieberman, Barbara Mikulski and John McCain.
Members of the diplomatic community also lent their name and support to the event, with ambassadors from Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama and others serving on the diplomatic
committee. In addition, Washington notables from organizations such as the Fox News Channel, America Online and the Washington Redskins pitched in and joined the festivities.
After martinis and hors díoeuvres, guests headed over to the intimate ballroom for the main concert. WTOP News Radioís Bob Madigan presided as master of ceremonies over an evening that featured an enchanting repertoire of waltzes, foxtrots, swing music and a stirring rendition of ìGod Bless America.î The classic numbers had many couples in the audience taking advantage of dance floor to show off their moves, making for a fine tribute to their cityís orchestra.
