Ambassadors Unite

Ambassadors from 120 nations joined President George W. Bush on the South Lawn of the White House to praise the international response to Sept. 11 and commemorate the solemn occasion of the six-month anniversary of the terrorist attacks. President Bush honored the diplomatic representatives by displaying their flags at the White House during the ceremony.

The ceremony had a distinguished guest list, which included members of Congress, Bushís Cabinet, the Supreme Court, the U.S. Armed Forces and military coalition members from around the world.

During the ceremony, President Bush addressed the ambassadors, thanking the nations that have supported the United States in the fight against terrorism and what he called ìthe worldís concerted responseî to Sept. 11. He honored the victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon bombings and paid tribute to soldiers from all nations who have lost their lives in the war in Afghanistan.

ìAmerica encourages and expects governments everywhere to help remove the terrorist parasites that threaten their own countries and peace of the world,î Bush said.

Ambassadors Faruk Logoglu of Turkey, Sung Chul Yang of South Korea and Jibril Aminu of Nigeria all addressed the assembly as well. Their heartfelt remarks paid respect to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and promised allegiance to U.S. efforts in Afghanistan.

Ambassador of Turkey Logoglu vowed the support of his Islamic nation in the war against terrorism, saying, ìTurkeyís presence in Afghanistan is one proof that the war on terrorism is not against Islam.î His poignant words resonated President Bushís theme of the day, which he expressed with these moving words: ìThere can be no peace in a world where differences and grievances become an excuse to target the innocent for murder.î
