Kennedy Center to Present ëCloudstreetí

Although itís a little daunting, the memorable "Cloudstreet" is coming straight from Australia, an epic family saga combining the forces of two major theater companies for a five-hour evening of theater at the Kennedy Center.

This significant theatrical experience will be presented Oct. 12, 13 and 14 at the centerís Eisenhower Theater, an evening that includes a 20-minute intermission and a dinner break. The production is co-produced by the Black Swan Theatre and the innovative Company B Belvoir, where Mel Gibson and Geoffrey Rush trained.

Hugely successful in Australia, the play is based on the prize-winning novel by Tim Winton. Itís been a hit since its premiere in Perth, and it has traveled to England, where the London Times called it "glorious, wonderful, warm-hearted" and the Daily Telegraph praised it for "itís stunning emotional impact Ö wonderfully lifelike, magnificently acted, wildly funny and intensely moving."
"Cloudstreet" makes the ordinary hugely dramatic. The play spans 20 years in the lives of two families, the Pickles and the Lambs. The Pickles own the house at 21 Cloudstreet,

in post-World War II Australia while the Lambs are renters. Over the years, the drama of the two families clash and intertwine as they cope with change, history and survival in a house haunted by Aboriginal spirits.

And speaking of things Australian and Aboriginal, the Eisenhower Theater will play host to the Bangarra Aboriginal Dance Theatre

Oct. 19 to 20 as the troupe performs its new work, "Corroboree." Bangarra is one of the most innovative performing arts companies to come out of Australia, telling contemporary stories of urban Aboriginal and islander peoples. The company draws on traditional dances and the culture of remote communities in Australiaís far north.
