The exhibit is often at odds with and communicates outside of official circles. The opening was an exercise in the meeting of cultures and peoples, and a number of the artists represented in the exhibition were also present at the reception, including two women artists. Currently, the islands of French Polynesia— which include such familiar names as Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, and extend to such more out-of-the-way attractions as the Marquesa and Austral archipelagoes— welcome almost 250,000 tourists a year, about the same number as the indigenous population. But because tourism is the territory’s main industry, executives hope for a substantial increase ahead.
